Media blocks

image block

Image

Use the plus [1] icon and select the image block to insert it and select in the pop-up where you want to get the image from.

You can make the image larger or smaller using the blue dots or by adjusting the dimensions, percentage or format in the block settings [2]. You can also add a short description (alt text) [3] or enter a link [4].

In the Block Editor [5] you have the following options, center, align left or right, full-width and wide.

With the option "Change Block Type" [6] you can convert your image into a cover, gallery or file. Scroll down for the possibilities within these blocks.

The last option, Media & Text [7] allows you to combine your image with text in various ways.
You can put a background color under your text here. In addition, you also have the option to determine how this layout will look on your mobile phone by using the button "Stack on Mobile, the blocks will be aligned at the same size.

cover block

The cover block allows you to display a short text (usually a headline) in a background image. The background image can be edited in various ways.

Just like with the image block, in the Block Toolbar [1] you can center the image, align it left or right, or use full or wide width. Your font, size and color are determined in the regular theme options, but you can make some minor adjustments here [2] such as bold, italic link and strikethrough. Cover Settings [3] allows you to set the image as fixed. This means that the image is locked in the background and will not move when the user scrolls down the page. But all other elements on the page scroll normally. Overlay [4] gives you the option to overlay color on the image to make the text easier to read, for example. Although the text The Background Opacity Slider [5] is used to set the transparency percentage.

gallery block

Search by Gallery or select it under Common Blocks. You can now drag one or more photos directly from your computer into the editor, upload them or select them from the media library [1] and add a caption. In the sidebar you can adjust the number of columns [2], adjust the size of your photos to the size of your gallery [3] and link to a media file or attachment page [4]. If you want to change or add a caption later, click on the photo [5] and use [+] to insert an extra image.

* The option "convert to single image" in the top left corner of the Block Editor splits the gallery into image blocks, you cannot undo this if you have already saved.

audio block

Image

The audio block is for uploading your own audio files (usually .mp3 files) to your site. After adding the audio block, use the media library to select or upload a (small, mind your load time!) audio file. Your audio will then be displayed with a simple HTML 5 audio player.

By default you have the following options:

  • Play
  • Pause
  • Volume
  • Download

* If you want to include audio from third party sources, use the Embed Block.
** The design of the audio player depends on the user's browser.

file block

The File Block allows you to add a downloadable file. The file can then be downloaded using a button or a link text.

* The color and text settings of the button depend on the settings in your theme

video block

Image

If you have a server with unlimited bandwidth, or a video hosting service, the video block will probably be of use to you. But in all other cases, I don't really recommend it. Video files are generally too large and heavy. It is better to use the embed block for displaying a video from external sources such as YouTube or Vimeo.

So only for those with unlimited bandwidth 😉
After you have added the video block, select or upload a (small!) video file. [1]
There are a number of settings you can set [2] such as turning autoplay, looping and sound on or off.
The Preload [3] tells your visitor's browser what to do when the page with the video on it is loaded: auto - load, none - don't load or metadata - load limited data about the video ( metadata).
The Poster Image [4] is the image that is used when the video does not start automatically and your first image is not very representative.
The Video Controls [5] give regular options like Play, Pause, Volume etc. Picture in picture [6] is a pop-up where the video is played.

embed block

Image

Embeds make it possible to show heavy files that can slow down your site on your website. By uploading your file to an external service such as YouTube or Spotify, you can then use the Embed Block to embed your video or playlist on your WordPress site. You can do that with a standard Embed Block, but there are also Embed Blocks for most popular services such as YouTube, Vimeo, Spotify, Tik Tok, Twitter, TED etc.

Choose the block with the service you want to show, for example an Instagram post. Copy the URL of this post and paste it into the window and click Embed. There are also a number of standard options such as aligning and adding a caption.
